I’ve been doored a few times over the years whilst riding, one of which was particularly injurious.
On a clear, bright summer day I was traveling at low-medium speed westbound on Montrose near Kedzie when a driver in a parked car suddenly popped his door open right in my path. I barely had any time to react. I instinctively grabbed the front brake and did a slow-motion endo over the bars, landing on my left shoulder *crunch* and hitting the back of my head forcefully on the street. Thankfully, traffic was stopped for a red light and I wasn’t also run over. The driver quickly called 911 for an ambulance and I had CPD write it up for the lawyers.
I was also wearing a hi-vis safety vest! Unfortunately, those don’t protect you from the carelessness of others.
After a trip to the ER, I found that I suffered a slight tear in my shoulder area and wrenched my neck but it could have been a lot worse.
